4B Satribari Christian Hospital
On July 1st 2010 4B Healthcare took over the management of Satribari Christian Hospital, Guwahati. SCH was Established in 1926 by Americal Missionaries as a center for care of women and children. It was the first in the North-East to start training nurses in 1927.
History
Seventy- five years ago American Baptist Missionaries working in Assam felt the need to start Medical work in Guwahati. In those days, social, cultural & religious beliefs prevented women from being treated by men. As there were not many qualified Women doctors in India, and community interventions were almost nil, the death rate among women & children was very high.
As a result of their vision to serve the women in Assam, the foundation stone of Gauhati Women and Children Hospital, a 25 bedded hospital was laid in the year 1923 and in 1926 the first inpatient was admitted. In 1944 the hospital was renamed to American Baptist Mission Hospital and eventually to Satribari Christian Hospital. The late 1970s saw the last of missionaries leaving India and the Baptist Churches taking over the hospital.
Present Status
The Hospital currently has a capacity of 155 beds and not only meets the needs of the local people but also gives services to patients from rural areas surrounding Guwahati and neighboring districts and states.
While many still consider Satribari Christian Hospital an important part of the heritage of the city, it has long lost its place as the cornerstone in the healthcare system of the city. Many reasons may be attributed to this decline, the chief being the inability of the hospital to Keep up with the times, whether in the modernizing of facilities or adapting the services offered according to the changing needs of the city.
4B Healthcare In Satribari
One of the parts of India we have strong links to and love for is the north east.Historically neglected and underdeveloped, but now rapidly growing, the cities in the north-east are unprepared to handle the rise in need in healthcare. The north east also has some o the highest concentration of Mission owned hospitals and religious organizations.
On July 1st 2010 4B Healthcare took over the management of Satribari Christian hospital from the Council of Baptist Churches in North East India (CBCNEI). Over the next years, we aspire to re-establish the hospital as one of the major centers of quality and service in the region.
